The man who sold hot dogs used a notebook.

It was grease-stained, soft at the corners, pages warped from steam and rain. Every night, after the last commuter left the station, he wrote down two numbers: how many he had cooked, and how many he had sold.

The difference was everything.

They met at the edge of an airfield that had no name on civilian maps—somewhere between logistics hub and geopolitical rumor. The buyer arrived in a convoy of identical vehicles. The seller arrived with a single tablet and no escort.

Between them sat the object of negotiation: not a hot dog cart, but a weapons system. Compact. Autonomous. Already used.

“Before we discuss price,” the buyer said, “we need performance data.”

The seller smiled—not warmly, but knowingly—and slid a document across the table.

“Last deployment,” he said, “urban environment. High-density. Contested airspace.”

The buyer didn’t look up. “And?”

“Confirmed impact outcomes: 312.”

There was a pause—not moral, not reflective. Computational.

In another part of the world, the hot dog vendor argued with a customer.

“Yesterday I sold out,” he said. “Had a line all the way past the ticket gates. Today? Same sausage, same bread. Why should I sell it cheaper?”

The customer shrugged. “Because I’m here now.”

The vendor tapped his notebook.

“This is also here now.”

Back at the airfield, the buyer finally spoke.

The seller leaned back.

“In modern procurement, value is not just who was hit,” he said. “It’s whether the system functioned under real conditions. Supply chains strained. GPS degraded. Countermeasures active.”

He paused.

“You’re not buying morality. You’re buying proof of execution.”

That was the real currency.

The global market had grown used to this logic.

The wars of the 2020s had turned weapons into datasets. After the invasion of Ukraine, demand surged, and so did production. The world’s largest arms producers reported record revenues—hundreds of billions of dollars—driven by active conflicts and rearmament across Europe and beyond.

Governments no longer asked, Will it work?

They asked, Where has it already worked?

Because global military spending had climbed to nearly $2.7 trillion annually, with a significant portion tied directly to procurement decisions shaped by recent battlefield performance.

And in that system, the past was not history.

It was pricing leverage.

The buyer flipped another page.

“Your competitor claims better survivability.”

“They haven’t deployed,” the seller replied.

“They’ve tested.”

“In controlled environments.”

Another pause.

Then the seller leaned forward, lowering his voice just enough to imply intimacy.

“Our system has been proven under fire.”

That phrase carried more weight than any technical specification.

The hot dog vendor, meanwhile, had lost the argument.

“Fine,” he muttered, handing over the food at a discount.

The customer walked away, already forgetting him.

The vendor looked at his notebook again.

Tomorrow’s price would rise.

Not because of ingredients.

Because of yesterday.

Back at the airfield, the deal closed.

Not at the buyer’s initial offer. Not at the seller’s asking price.

As the convoy departed, one of the buyer’s aides hesitated.

“Do we… verify those numbers?” she asked.

Her superior didn’t look up from the contract.

“We verify outcomes,” he said. “Not narratives.”
