The solution arrived from an unlikely source.

Cockroaches.

Not ordinary cockroaches, but a genetically engineered strain developed by researchers studying insect intelligence and collective behavior. The insects had been modified to preferentially consume specific categories of food waste while avoiding household belongings. Tiny RFID-responsive neural implants allowed them to gather at designated collection stations where they could be monitored and harvested.

At first, the public reacted with horror.

Children learned in school how billions of microorganisms, insects, and fungi quietly sustained human civilization.

Gradually, public opinion softened.

The turning point came during an unusually hot summer.

A severe heat wave struck western Japan. Food waste decomposed rapidly, attracting disease-carrying flies. The engineered cockroach colonies responded automatically, consuming waste before it could become a health hazard. Epidemiologists later estimated that the insects prevented thousands of gastrointestinal infections.

The newspapers changed their tone.

“Unsung Heroes of Urban Ecology,” one headline read.

A television station broadcast a documentary showing the insects working around the clock beneath the city. For the first time, people saw them not as invaders but as collaborators.

Among the viewers was a ten-year-old girl named Aoi.

One day she asked her grandfather a question.

“Grandpa, why do people love dogs but hate cockroaches?”

“Because dogs seem like family.”

“But these bugs help us too.”

“That’s true.”

“Then shouldn’t we like them?”

The next week her class visited a research center. There they learned that dogs had not become humanity’s companions merely because they were mammals. Wolves and humans had gradually aligned their interests tens of thousands of years ago. Humans benefited from protection and hunting assistance; wolves benefited from food and shelter. Modern dogs emerged from that mutual relationship.

The researchers explained that affection often follows cooperation.

Humans tend to anthropomorphize animals whose goals overlap with their own. Companion animals signal loyalty, dependence, and social attachment. These traits activate psychological mechanisms associated with kinship and caregiving.

Then the lead scientist posed a question.

“If an animal helps us survive, improves our lives, and shares our goals, must it be furry before we can love it?”

The classroom fell silent.

Years passed.

The engineered cockroaches became a routine part of city infrastructure. Children grew up seeing educational mascots modeled after them. Some citizens even kept miniature colonies as waste-processing pets.

Not everyone liked them.

Many people still found them unpleasant.

But hatred faded.

A colleague beside her laughed.

“Respect.”

The answer surprised even her.

Perhaps humanity had misunderstood the question all along.

The opposite of love was not hatred.

It was indifference.

Dogs had earned human affection because their interests aligned with ours and because evolution had equipped them with traits that made emotional bonding easy. Cockroaches lacked those traits. Yet when their interests became deeply intertwined with human well-being, they gained something different.

Not affection.

Not friendship.

But a place within the human moral community.

And perhaps that was enough.

For in the end, humans do not merely love what resembles them.

They also learn, slowly and imperfectly, to value whatever helps them flourish together in a shared world.
