A new chapter awaited

Yet, amidst the chaos, she held on to the hope that they would find stability and peace in their next destination.....

At the embassy in a bustling city, the dinner party was the highlight of the social calendar for many wives of embassy staff from various countries. It was a chance to showcase culinary delights, exchange stories, and build international friendships. However, the much-anticipated event was suddenly canceled. When several of the women were called, they discovered that many had already returned to their home countries without any prior notice.

Among the disappointed was Maria, whose husband was an embassy staff member. She had been looking forward to the gathering, not just for the food and socializing but also because of her budding friendship with a young man named Antonio, a tennis buddy. Out of the blue, Antonio proposed to her. “Maria,” he said, “I’ll be able to eat delicious food from all over the world, make friends with many different people, and learn many different languages if you marry me. Please, be my wife.”

Despite her initial surprise, Maria accepted. Life as the wife of an embassy staff member was a whirlwind of cultures and experiences. However, the role came with its own set of anxieties. Maria grew increasingly worried when her husband hadn’t returned home for three days. The atmosphere was tense, exacerbated by the political turmoil brewing around them.

The US Secretary of State had recently declared “overwhelming evidence” that Venezuela’s opposition had won the presidential election. In a powerful statement, Antony Blinken announced that Edmundo González had received the most votes, despite incumbent President Nicolás Maduro’s disputed victory. “Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people, that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s 28 July presidential election,” Mr. Blinken said. The international pressure mounted as the presidents of Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia called on Venezuela to release the full election details.

With this political backdrop, Maria hurriedly prepared to leave the country. Her heart ached as she watched her young daughter wave goodbye to her playmates in the neighborhood. The little girl’s innocence and joy were a stark contrast to the turmoil and uncertainty Maria felt. The sadness hit her suddenly, but she knew they had to move quickly.
