A shift in gears

And with that, they returned to their tasks, their minds still buzzing with the stories and dreams they'd shared.....

Under the blazing South Indian sun, two road construction workers, Arjun and Venkatesh, sat on a makeshift bench during their lunch break. Dust clung to their sweat-soaked shirts as they opened their tiffin boxes, sharing stories and opinions to pass the time.

“Venkatesh, have you heard about Trump?” Arjun asked, taking a bite of his dosa.

“Ah, Trump? The American guy?” Venkatesh replied, scooping some chutney with his idli.

“Yeah, him. You know, I kind of like him. He’s rich, but he always has hungry eyes,” Arjun said, gesturing animatedly. “He never seems satisfied, always wanting more. It’s something.”

“Hungry eyes, huh? Well, rich or poor, hunger is something we all understand,” Venkatesh chuckled, shaking his head. “But what about Kamala Harris? Have you heard much about her?”

“Of course,” Arjun nodded. “She’s quite something too. A minority, but minorities today are completely different from those of the past. She’s breaking barriers, showing what’s possible.”

Venkatesh sighed, looking thoughtful. “Times have changed, indeed. When I was younger, I never thought I’d see someone like her in such a high position. It gives hope, you know?”

“Absolutely,” Arjun agreed. “It’s not just about them being in power, but about the message it sends to everyone. That if you work hard, you can achieve great things, no matter where you come from.”

The two men sat in comfortable silence for a moment, enjoying their meal and the brief respite from their labor. The road ahead was long, but their conversation had lightened the load, if only for a little while.

“Back to work?” Venkatesh asked, packing up his tiffin.

“Back to work,” Arjun nodded, standing up and stretching. “But let’s keep talking. It makes the day go faster.”
