Julian dumped the old filter, rinsed the brewer, and adjusted his hand grinder three clicks finer to narrow the particle distribution. He weighed out fresh beans, poured hot water off the boil, and carefully controlled his agitation to ensure an even bed depth.

Minutes later, he handed Maya a fresh cup and set the new bed of spent grounds on the tray.

This time, the leftover bed was flat, compact, and mud-free, resembling soft, damp peat. When Maya leaned over it, the heavy aromatic perfumery was gone—the aroma had successfully transferred into the brew. She took a sip of the new cup.

“Wow,” she murmured, the vibrant floral notes and sweet stone fruit finally present. “It’s completely different.”
