Yet all that precision could not guarantee identical experiences.

As another volley erupted, Naoki found himself wondering.

The fireworks finale began.

Hundreds of shells erupted almost simultaneously, illuminating the river so brightly that for a moment every face around them seemed to glow.

Naoki no longer cared whether his family perceived exactly the same colors.

Perhaps consciousness was destined to remain fundamentally private. Perhaps every human being inhabited a world that only approximately overlapped with everyone else’s.

If so, love was not the miracle of sharing identical experiences.

The final echoes rolled across the river.

His son climbed sleepily onto the bicycle.

His daughter rested against her mother’s shoulder.
