Rethinking Cupboard Efficiency: Why Space Matters

At seventy, Masao had developed a peculiar habit in his kitchen.

He never filled the cupboards completely.

His daughter had noticed it the first time she helped him clean the apartment. There were stacks of plates with gaps between them, bowls arranged with what looked like unnecessary precision, and an entire shelf where several centimeters of empty space separated one group of dishes from another.

“You could fit another five or six plates here,” she said.

Masao smiled. “I know.”

She assumed he was simply being old-fashioned.

A few weeks later, she understood.

Masao lived alone, and his hands were no longer as strong or steady as they had been. He could still cook perfectly well, but reaching into a deep cupboard for a plate buried behind other dishes had become an awkward task. Sometimes he would pull out three bowls just to reach one at the back. Once, while standing on his toes, he nearly lost his balance.

So he changed the way he stored everything.

Frequently used plates went at the front. Heavy dishes stayed between waist and shoulder height. Nothing was stacked so high that removing the bottom item required lifting everything above it. He left enough clearance to slide a single plate out without catching its edge against the neighboring stack.

The arrangement looked wasteful.

It was not.

Masao had begun thinking about efficiency differently.

In logistics and warehouse engineering, the maximum number of objects that can be packed into a given volume is only one measure of efficiency. Another is accessibility: how quickly and safely a particular item can be retrieved. Modern warehouses increasingly use digital inventory systems, barcode scanning, automated storage and retrieval systems, and robots to reduce the time required to locate and move individual items. A perfectly packed warehouse is useless if every retrieval requires moving ten other boxes first.

The same principle applied to Masao’s cupboard.

One Sunday, his daughter came over to make lunch. She opened the cupboard and reached directly for a large bowl.

She pulled it out with one hand.

Nothing else moved.

“You’ve made this easier,” she said.

Masao nodded.

“That’s the point.”

He explained that he had spent most of his life confusing full with efficient. At work, he had admired shelves packed to the ceiling and schedules filled from morning until night. An empty space had seemed like something that needed to be eliminated.

But with age, he had learned that empty space could be working space.

A gap between two plates gave his fingers somewhere to grip. A clear section of countertop made cooking easier. A few unplanned minutes in the afternoon made it possible to deal with an unexpected problem without the entire day collapsing.

His daughter looked again at the cupboard.

There was, she realized, nothing inefficient about it.

The empty space was doing a job.

That evening, before leaving, she opened her own phone and looked at her calendar. Every hour of the following week was occupied.

She deleted one appointment.

Then another.

For the first time, the blank spaces did not make her feel that she was wasting time.

They felt like room to move.
