Research activities seem to require not only reading the literature and introducing it, but also doubting the content of the literature. That is to verify the content of the literature from different angles, and it is not a mere question.
The islands of the Pacific have a legend that the inhabitants of the islands have migrated across the sea. The hypothesis that the ancestors drifted ashore and settled in a canoe from a distant island is compelling. It is unlikely that the inhabitants were born suddenly on an island with nothing but palm trees, and if you believe it came from a distant island, it would be kind of romantic.
However, one anthropologist questioned it and denied the islanders drifting theory. The ground for the denial was calorie counting.
The scholar focused on the climate of the Pacific and found that temperatures over the Pacific were very different between day and night. In the daytime, the temperature in the open ocean is extremely high, and at night, due to the characteristics of the ocean’s weather, the temperature drops sharply and is extremely cold.
A long voyage in such a large temperature difference requires a large amount of calories to keep body temperature. However, palm-rowed rowing canoes cannot carry large amounts of food to guarantee such calorie content.
Therefore, it was concluded that long-term voyages by rowing canoe are basically impossible, and the theory of drifting islanders by long-term voyages is unrealistic.
We have a cartoon image that the Pacific islands are warm throughout the year and you can spend the time in the shade of the trees while drinking juice of palm fruit, but the reality is different. At night, it gets cold and you can’t go far by canoeing.
So where do the people from the peaceful islands of the Pacific come from? The researchers still don’t answer.
